I remember some years ago an incident in which somebody I knew made allegations of improper behaviour against a police officer. Athough this person was a ‘thoroughly bad lot’, the police dealt with the complaint promptly and in a professionally manner. The officer was cleared of all allegations - and rightly so – but procedures were rigorously followed.

Two more pigeons have been found staked out at the same location as detailed in our article of May 13th 09. The first pigeon was found by a passer-by and released. Then two days later, another pigeon was found, again at the same location, staked out. Now it’s got full police attention, and this time they are investigating the matter in a forceful manner.

Raptor persecution is not only confined to the Forest of Bowland, it has been happening in Cumbria for the whole of the 20th century, but more particularly in the northern Pennines which is the main area for game (grouse) shooting activities. Peregrine falcons that try to establish a breeding territory in the area get very short shrift from the persecutors and disappear very quickly.
In 2005 there were no young birds raised at any of the five sites on or adjacent to these Northern Pennine grouse moors. Sadly an adult female Peregrine was also found poisoned in the area. Summary of Attempt to Poison a Nesting pair of Peregrine Falcons in West Cumbria this year.
Location: Salterhall Quarry, Rowrah, Cumbria

Cumbria 14th April 2009
On the 6th March I visited Salterhall Quarry in West Cumbria, which has been used by a pair of Peregrines to successfully breed for a number of years. The purpose of this visit to the quarry was to establish if the territory was occupied by falcons this season, and also to try and locate any potential nesting site. Under normal circumstances, this particular pair of Peregrines would have laid a full clutch of eggs by the 14th April. On this visit I observed an adult female falcon at the site.
