Golden Eagle Poisoned in Scotland

GOLDED EAGLE POISONED THIS MONTH IN W. SCOTLAND Strathclyde Police probe launched over poisoned Golden Eagle.

We have just received information from Scotland that once again a Golden Eagle has been found poisoned, this time in Argyll.

The dead Eagle was found by hill walkers on the slopes of Beinn Udlaidh in the Glen Orchy area on 7 June. The walkers alerted the RSPB who then called in police.

It is significant in Scotland the police appear to be working to different priorities, taking very seriously any illegal persecution of their native wildlife, just as important taking firm action against those responsible.

To read about this sad find we would direct our web site readers to the following News link:

In 2007 police were alerted when another Golden Eagle, one of a nesting pair, was found poisoned in the Scottish Borders near Peebles. In that instance a reward of £1000 was offered for any information leading to the conviction of the person or persons responsible.

The following quote is by Bob Elliot, head of RSPB investigation for Scotland.

“Sadly, illegal persecution of birds of prey continues to be a shameful fact of life in parts of Scotland in the 21st century, and unfortunately the evidence shows that there is a correlation between the location of grouse moors and the incidence of raptor poisoning.”

It’s a sad irony, the criminal persecution of Britain’s raptors in the 21st Century will never be brought under control without a decisive strategy designed to hit the pockets of the landowners themselves. Only when these people begin to realise that by allowing their employees to kill protected birds of prey and destroy their nests on property they own, the penalty should no longer be a paltry fine. We totally concur with the Scottish Raptor Study Groups across the border. Let such acts against national and international interests become subject to full cross-compliance, whereby all taxpayers’ grants and subsidies and inheritance tax remissions, for all purposes (not just the penalty of 5% removal of agricultural subsidies as applied so far), are blocked completely. At a stroke there would come respect for the law of the land, responsible stewardship of land on behalf of the public, and an end to abuse of privilege.

You should contact RSPB or the police in Scotland, however we doubt if they will prodide any feathers from poisoned birds recovered. Or a better bet, contactb the falconry groups to see if you can be put in touch with a breeder of golden eagles.
Most breeders and falconers however would we suspect wish to retain all moulted feathers.

bearing in mind the remoteness of the eagles habitat it is actually quite remarkable that these poisoned eagles were ever acctually found at all. so it begs the question, how many are poisoned and never found? i bet scores, every year. what can we do to change this? probably nothing with all the bullshit from the to numerous “protectionist” organisations involved in so called bird protection in the uk?
