Another red kite has now been confirmed poisoned in Scotland, this time in Strathtay, near Aberfeldy, Perthshire. Although the bird was found dead towards the letter end of July, toxicology results undertaken by SASA have only recently confirmed poisoning to have been the cause. Tayside police are now appealing for any information to bring those responsible to justice.

In 2009 a white-tailed eagle, two golden eagles, four red kites, and 21 buzzards were confirmed by the Scottish Government as being victims of illegal poisoning. Baits laced with highly toxic and illegal poisons continued to be deliberately laid out in the open in Scotland’s countryside. A red kite was shot and a further four buzzards were confirmed as shot or trapped. Peregrines and hen harriers nesting on driven grouse moors again “disappeared” in circumstances that suggested deliberate human interference.

Both countries are experiencing dramatic increases in reported cases of birds of prey being poisoned. The Scottish and Irish governments have now agreed to a partnership to work together to tackle the illegal poisoning of golden eagles, white-tailed eagles and other birds of prey. Environment Minister Roseanna Cunningham has written to her Irish counterpart, asking for talks on the “unacceptable problem”. Ms Cunningham wants to look at possible joint initiatives.

A young Irish Golden Eagle has been found poisoned on the Sligo/Leitrim border at Truskmore Mountain. The 10-month-old eagle chick was born and reared in a Donegal eyrie in 2009. The bird had spent the last four months wandering the beautiful mountains above Glencar Waterfall, Lough Gill and Gleniff.

Yes, this is a very early post covering both yesterday and today!! Both days will have been devoted to writing various articles and comments about raptor persecution and what is needed in the future!
Within 24 hours of my talking about such matters in Angus a Golden Eagle was found poisoned on a private estate within the county. Found, because it was fitted with a satellite transmitter that allowed the corpse to be located. Sad, because this individual was the one whose transmitter was fitted around two years ago at a site in the Highlands by Roy Dennis and whose movements have been followed and enjoyed by many via a web site link. Obviously the police will investigate and one hopes those who are guilty will be brought to book. Yet another demonstration of the management activities employed on grouse moors gaining another victim! Strong words from politicians and lots of hand wringing from others , but what action will result to bring about change? A difficult problem admittedly but one that , quite frankly, is ludicrous if it continues . It’s not just the fact that the law is being broken, but that is being broken deliberately and persistently by a minority who obviously believe they are above its constraints. Such arrogance usually precedes a major fall from grace in my opinion, however long one has to wait for the result!!

A golden eagle which was found dead at an estate in Angus was illegally poisoned, police have confirmed. The bird was being tracked as part of a Scottish Natural Heritage project but her movements came to an abrupt stop at the beginning of July. Police and wildlife investigators have been searching the Millden Estate, near Brechin, in connection with the death. The police said the area was popular with walkers and anyone with information should get in touch. Environment Minister Roseanna Cunningham condemned the killing. Ms Cunningham said: “I am truly appalled that yet another golden eagle has been illegally killed in Scotland – the second this summer.”Illegal poisoning is simply inexcusable and while the perpetrators are certainly beneath contempt they are in no way above the law. “Dr Ian Jardine, chief executive of Scottish Natural Hertiage, said: “We are working with police and other partners in the Partnership Against Wildlife Crime (PAW) to try and wipe out poisoning of wildlife. “It would appear that a determined minority are continuing to spoil people’s enjoyment of these magnificent golden eagles.”

Strathclyde Police probe launched over poisoned Golden Eagle.
We have just received information from Scotland that once again a Golden Eagle has been found poisoned, this time in Argyll.
The dead Eagle was found by hill walkers on the slopes of Beinn Udlaidh in the Glen Orchy area on 7 June. The walkers alerted the RSPB who then called in police.
It is significant in Scotland the police appear to be working to different priorities, taking very seriously any illegal persecution of their native wildlife, just as important taking firm action against those responsible.
