Latvian nest site.

The first White-tailed eagle nest is located in Western part of Latvia in Durbe County. The territory has been used by the nesting pair since 2014. This territory is interesting  because of its location in the spruce tree. It is only the fourth historically known nest in Latvia that is built in spruce (roughly half of all nests are built in pine trees, one third – in aspen trees, one tenth – in birch trees; more seldom spruce, oak and black alder is chosen). “Spruce nests” are usually built on such broken tops and are located high above the ground (in this case roughly 30 meters) – the highest nest of a White-tailed eagle in Latvia is located 31.5 meters (roughly 99 feet) above the ground and is built in spruce as well. Camera was installed in winter 2015.

Estonia nest site.

The second White-tailed eagle nest is located in Western Estonia. In the same area the web camera was placed in 2009-2013, at the so called Linda and Sulev’s nest. The first of the nests at that time was situated across the bog from the present nest which is visible behind the tree crowns. The first plan to install the camera at the new nest of white-tailed eagles Anna and Uku, popular in 2016, did not succeed since the new nest too had fallen down in winter.

The installation of the camera in the new location was made in two snowy days in early February; Renno, Omar, Triin and Urmas took part. We did not see the eagles then. Hopefully neither did they see us .

  • The three Eagle-cams shown above are of superb quality.
It is a kind gesture, from the group’s responsible, to allow Raptor Politics to use this material.
Originating from countries generally thought of as being poorer,in many ways,
than the UK, but probably with a generally greater respect for wildlife, it would be nice to reciprocate with a nest or two of our own.
Maybe a Hen Harrier from Bowland,a Peregrine from the Yorkshire Dales, or a
    Goshawk from the Dark Peak.
