GoFundMe campaign brings hope for Peregrine Falcons in the Forest of Bowland.

North West Raptor Protection Group members

I would like to share this image taken in the Dunsop Valley this weekend showing the North West Raptor Protection Group members with their new bicycles which have been funded by our GoFundMe campaign. These bicycles allow members to travel along moorland tracks in Bowland where our members are better equipped to gather and monitor incidents of raptor persecution. Currently the Hen Harrier has not bred on any shooting estate in the Forest of Bowland during the past two seasons. The Peregrine Falcon is extinct as a breeding bird on all but one estate in Bowland, with just two pairs raising chicks on a single estate owned by United Utilities in 2017. The current situation throughout the Forest of Bowland is truly appalling representing a disgrace to which our current Tory government are turning a blind eye.

Most of the estate tracks throughout the Forest of Bowland are protected by locked gates preventing vehicular access , but cyclists are allowed. Where in previous seasons it has taken group members many hours to walk along these tracks when checking historic nesting territories;  using our new cycles it takes the group just a fraction of the time it had in past.

As many followers of this blog will be aware, for the first time in living memory, a gamekeeper is currently facing nine criminal charges associated with the alleged killing of two Peregrine Falcons in the Forest of Bowland. Video evidence of the crimes were captured on an RSPB surveillance camera installed overlooking an active nest containing eggs on the Bleasdale estate in April 2016. You can read an account of the on-going criminal prosecution HERE

On behalf of the NWRPG I would like to express my sincere thanks to each and every one who has supported our campaign by making a small donation to better protect raptors in the Forest of Bowland.
