Australia’s largest owl under threat due to loss of habitat-sign the petition.

he Powerful Owl is the largest owl in Australia. But due to loss of habitat, the biggest owl in Australia is dying out across the country. The Powerful Owl is listed as Vulnerable in Queensland, Threatened in Victoria, Endangered in South Australia and Vulnerable in New South Wales (NSW).

Powerfull Owl

The main threat to the Powerful Owl is the clearing of habitat, especially the loss of old-growth hollow-bearing trees. The Powerful Owl requires hollows for nesting and many of its prey species are also hollow-dependent.

Over 50% of forest and woodland in NSW alone has been cleared and the process is continuing. In addition, prime habitat for the Powerful Owl has been targeted for agricultural clearing, logging, conversion to pine plantations and urbanisation.

The number of mature individuals has been estimated at 7,000 nationally – with over half occurring in NSW. In NSW alone, only 2000 breeding pairs are estimated to remain.

The remaining habitat of the Powerful Owl needs to be protected in order to save this bird of prey from slipping into extinction. Please sign the petition and demand the government of Australia takes action to save the Powerful Owl.

he Powerful Owl requires large tracts of forest or woodland habitat. It prefers forest or woodland blocks of more than 200 hectares and avoids small patches and strips. It also tends to live in the hollows of old-growth trees, as does most of its prey. So when those trees are cut down — as is happening throughout Australia — neither the owl nor its food supply has anywhere left to go.

Additionally, the owls have been accidental casualties of “pest control” methods to kill less so-called “desirable” birds. In 2007, the New South Wales Labour Government put out poisoned bird seed to kill Indian mynahs, murdering native birds like Powerful Owls in the process.

More than 50% of forest and woodland in NSW alone has been cleared and the process is continuing: prime habitat for the owls has been targeted for logging or development projects.

The owl’s remaining habitat must be protected in order to keep this unique bird from going extinct. Tell Australia’s government to take action to save the Powerful Owl!

  • I have signed this and urge people to do the same.
My apologies for not being so active on this wonderful and important site but my husbands failing health leave me little time for anything other than keeping my rescue going at the moment.
Rest assured I will continue to campaign and fight for the raptors here and in other countries, that will never change.

  • Stop this ridiculous act
