Results by 21 independent groups in Britain, collated by the Barn Owl Trust, have discovered that 2013 was the worst year for barn owls since records began.

Voted the most popular farmland bird in Britain, this flagship for nature conservation is without doubt the most extensively monitored bird species in the UK. At least 7,000 potential nest sites are checked each year by a wide range of enthusiasts, volunteer groups, and dedicated Barn  Owl projects. As a result, huge amounts of data are gathered each year. Around 2,500 broods were recorded in 2012 alone (calculation based on BTO ringing data). Read the full report here.
