Man arrested in connection with attempted trapping of birds of prey in Deeside, Scotland

As a result of a joint operation between Scottish Police Officers and RSPB in the Deeside area of Aberdeenshire, a 54 year old male has been reported to the Procurator Fiscal in connection with offences linked to Wildlife Crimes.  There are unconfirmed reports that following  covert video surveillance, evidence of value has been obtained which is likely to result in a prosecution being pursued.

Superintendent George Macdonald said, ‘This enquiry highlights the value of our joint working partnership approach to crimes in the countryside, it also emphasises the importance of members of the public reporting any suspicious activity which they may believe is linked to crimes.

Throughout Aberdeenshire and Moray, we have a number of highly trained and skilled officers who have a detailed understanding of wildlife crime and appropriate investigation skills.  Along with Partners, we are keen to take action when such crimes occur, but rely heavily on public support to piece together such incidents and I would encourage anyone with information on such matters to call us.’

I thought video evidence obtained covertly was inadmissible in Scotland after a court ruling in a similar case a couple of years ago, if not why will it be different this time ???

The outcome of this if it ever gets to court may prove very interesting!

Editor’s Comment. We suspect the Sheriff has the final say on whether or not to allow video evidence into his court. If he is a shooting supporter it will be no!

Was it the Duke of Edinburgh?
Editor’s Comment. John if the Duke of Edinburgh could change places, in particular his age, with the man now charged we are sure he would do so and pay the paltry fine.
