Northern Hawk Owl rescued by kayaker – Finland

Pentti Taskinen was out kayaking on Finland’s Lake Tuusula when he noticed something moving in the icy waters. Paddling closer, he was surprised to discover it was a Northern Hawk Owl. Fearing the owl would freeze to death in the water, Pentti picked the bird out of the water and onto the front of his kayak.

According to the Finnish paper, Ilta-Sanomat, the owl moved closer to Pentti and cuddled under his life jacket for warmth. Once the owl dried off and had regained strength he flew off, no doubt thankful to his rescuer.

Bald Eagle Rescued by fisherman – Columbia, Missouri,

Real men are kind to animals! When Roger Giles was fishing on the Missouri River near Cooper’s Landing in Columbia, Missouri, he noticed a bald eagle in trouble.

“I went out to check a trot line and saw the eagle on the bank, seemingly in distress. It jumped into the water, got water-logged and was starting to go under when I pulled it out,” Roger said.

The eagle is now being cared for at the raptor rehab (Rehab Project of University of Missouri).

Roger kindly updated us with his comment below: “That you for the kind words, it was my honor to assist this eagle in its time of distress. Feedback from the MU CVM Raptor Rehabilitation Program is that all tests/x-rays have come back good, the eagle is eating, and is recovering its strength. Best theory to date is that it was injured in a fight with another raptor (along our stretch of the Missouri River there are many eagles, hawks, vultures, etc., but that will likely never be verifiable. Our hope is that the eagle improves to the extent that it can be released, and all involved are optimistic that this will be the ultimate outcome. You all are good people, I suspect you’d have done the same if you had been faced with the same situation.”

It’s great to read articles like this, it restores my confidence that there are counties and people who truly respect these magnificent birds around the world. Sadly Britain lags well behind in this respect.

  • Very true Terry, but some of us keep doing our best and will continue to do so while sadly others are doing their utmost to wipe the raptor population out, until the punishment fits the crime there is no deterrent and it will continue.
