Island of Lewis wind turbine plan scrapped

An electricity company has abandoned its plans to build a multi-million pound wind farm on the island of Lewis. Plans for 26 turbines on the Pairc Estate have been withdrawn because of the danger to bird life, Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) said.

Fewer birds of prey poisoned claims the Scottish Gamekeepers Association.

The number of birds of prey being illegally poisoned in Scotland has fallen dramatically, according to the Scottish Gamekeepers Association (SGA). Last year, there were 10 confirmed illegal poisonings, with the loss of 16 birds of prey. The figure had represented a 42% fall from 2010, when there were 22 incidents recorded and 28 birds [...]

The last batch of 30 Red Kites released in Cumbria today bringing this exciting reintroduction project to a close.

Thirty red kites will were released into the skies over Cumbria’s Grizedale Forest today in the final phase of a scheme to reintroduce the spectacular birds to the county. Today’s releases bring the total number of released kites to ninety.
