This week a single record of a male Montagu’s harrier is reported from Black Moss and Champion Moor just two miles east of Slaidburn village in the Forest of Bowland, Lancashire. How long this bird will remain on the moor is anyone’s guess. The same area was a well know location for passage hen harrier in both the spring and autumn. The area where most viewing have been made is south of Tinklers lane and north above Swallows Scars at (SD 747 518) : View on Google Maps

An application has been submitted to fence off part of CHAMPION MOOR.
ELOC’s main objection to this proposal is the use of the moor by roosting Hen Harriers. We are aware that because of the sensitive nature of this species, some observers have not submitted records from this site. These are now urgently required to enable the club to present a full case at the Public Enquiry; the date is still to be decided by the Planning Inspectorate – because of the national significance of this application, it is not being decided by the local authority. Please submit any such records via the ‘Contact Us’ button on the ELOC website home page, marked for the attention of the Chairman. If you know of anybody else with Hen Harrier records for this site, please submit them on their behalf if they are unable to do so themselves. Thank you in anticipation.
Who wants to put a fence up? And why?
