The Glorious Twelfth and the start of the red grouse shooting season is drawing closer, but, finds Nick Drainey, there is something else exercising the minds of many in the Scottish countryside – the illegal poisoning of birds of prey. In what amounts to an unprecedented move by the RSPB in Scotland, the society is now telling Scottish estates and their owners to respect birds of prey instead of killing them.

THE POISONING of birds of prey is a sickening crime that has hit the headlines with increasing frequency in the last year. But with a continuing war of words over who is responsible, is it possible to stop? In an extraordinary outburst RSPB Scotland has told estates and landowners it is time they “sorted out” the problem of birds of prey being killed.
